Menswear retailer Jacamo reports soaring sales as fans take up the look
Phil Neville’s waistcoat has not only proved a lucky charm for England football lionesses, it has sent sales of the tailored piece soaring at online retailer Jacamo.
After last night’s spectacular win against Norway, which saw the women roaring into the World Cup semi-final, retailers were braced for the Neville effect.
A similar surprise trend happened when waistcoat devotee Gareth Southgate took the England Three Lions team to the semi-final of last year’s men’s tournament in Russia.
Few foresaw that that his sartorial pitch-side look would make him a style symbol.
Just as then, the knock-on effect has seen sales soar as men take up the three-piece suit or don a separate waistcoat in solidarity and growing excitement around the team.
Leading menswear brand Jacamo reports that since Phil lead the team out in the first game against Scotland in his tailored best, waistcoats have flown off the shelves.
Online hits mentioning the product are up 10% while sales have rocketed almost 30% on the week before the tournament in France started.
Tags such as @Lionesses #LuckyWaistcoat have appeared as fans see a similarity with the success experienced by the boss of the men’s side when the waistcoat was first dubbed a lucky charm. England eventually lost in the semi-final to Croatia.
Comedians have picked up the trend by joking that VAR were checking for an obvious steal. Rumour has it that Southgate phoned and demanded his waistcoat back.
Freddie Flintoff, a style ambassador for Jacamo, who played with Neville for Lancashire U11s, has even recreated the waistcoat look for Jacamo. https://www.jacamo.co.uk/shop/clothing/suits-waistcoats/waistcoats/_/N-1ytj15h/products/show.action
Jenni Bamford from Jacamo said: “The Lionesses have really done us proud and are looking to go all the way and bring the trophy home. At the same time Phil’s dapper look has proved a hit with fans and shown how success and confidence can come with a stylish look.”
