CATE THE GREAT: CATE BLANCHETT TOPS BEST DRESSED OSCARS POLL FOR MIDSTER WOMEN

20 February 2019

More women aged 50+ being nominated for awards than ever before

As award season approaches, and with more focus on the female nominees than ever before as Brit actresses Olivia Coleman and Rachel Weisz bag Baftas for their star turns in The Favourite, one online retailer has revealed the nation’s favourite ever Oscar outfit for ‘Midster’ (age 45+) nominees.

Leading the way in the style stakes was Cate Blanchett, whose Armani Prive dress from the 2014 Oscars was crowned the nations favourite Midster Oscar dress of all time.

The retailer surveyed 1,000 UK women aged 45 and up to discover the awards best dressed Midsters.  The screen siren, who was 44 at the time, wore a shimmering nude crystal embellished gown worth a staggering £60,000, teaming the gown with an estimated £11million worth of Chopard jewellery.

American sweetheart Sandra Bullock was a close second in her 2010 Marchesa dress, followed by Salma Hayek in aqua blue Versace at the 2006 Oscars. The royal blue Armani Prive dress worn by Nicole Kidman to last year’s Oscar ceremony was in fourth place.

Research by JD Williams has revealed that the average age of female winners is on the up – the age of Oscar winners was at its oldest in 2018, the average age being 59 years old. A happy surprise in an industry notoriously famed for its obsession with youth.

The retailer reviewed the age and gender of nominees over the past five years and found that age diversity is definitely improving - the age of Oscar nominees has slowly been increasing since 2015 and the average age of 2018’s Oscar winners was a respectable 56 years.

This year’s Academy Awards will see Brit favourite Olivia Coleman, 45, battle it out against Glenn Close, 71; Lady Gaga, 32; Yalitza Aparicio, 25; and Melissa McCarthy, 48 for Best Actress.

Despite the encouraging statistics the retailer’s study highlights that there have always been more men aged 50+ nominated than women - and there has never been more than two female winners over 50 during one year, in contrast to the number of men aged 50+ who have taken home trophies.

Spokesperson for JD Williams Suzi Burns said “We know our customers love to follow the celebrity trends and take inspiration from key calendar events such as the Oscars so we’re excited to see what trends are on show at this year’s ceremony.

“It’s also encouraging to see more Midster women being nominated as time goes on - however it would be great to see more of these women winning awards this year. Perhaps 2019 is the year!”
