The Seven Fashion Ages of Man

20 March 2018

  • Brooklyn Beckham, Harry Styles and Tom Hiddleston among style-icons
  • Pierce Brosnan and Harrison Ford show fashion has no age restrictions

Brooklyn Beckham, Harry Styles, Tom Hiddleston, Freddie Flintoff and Colin Firth have been named trend-setters in a study of the seven “fashion” ages of man.

Flying the style flag for men in their 60’s and 70’s, were action movie stars Pierce Brosnan and Harrison Ford.

The survey for men’s’ fashion brand Jacamo also identified seven iconic items of clothing men associate with formative stages of their lives, from being teenagers to entering their seventies.

Brooklyn, who turned 19 this month and is the oldest of the four Beckham children, won most votes as representative of the teenage years, along with jeans as the must-have item for that age.

Harry Styles aged 24, was the guy people felt most epitomised the look men want in their twenties. A leather jacket was the top item of clothing for men in that age group. Star of the Night Manager Tom Hiddleston, was chosen as something of a fashion icon for those in their thirties, along with a well cut suit as the top garment.

Former cricketer, turned TV personality and Jacamo Ambassador, AndrewFreddie’ Flintoff, was a popular choice for men in their 40’s. Freddie admits he doesn’t take fashion too seriously and that his own style has evolved since he started working for the brand in 2011. Now he feels as good in smart as casual clothes and rocks a tuxedo.

Colin Firth, 57, who was catapulted to fame after that, wet shirt scene in the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, has since won an Oscar and scores of fans of his style when he’s wearing dry clothes. His casual English gentleman look made him the fashion choice for the fifties age group, along with a good tweed jacket.

Hollywood power houses, James Bond star Pierce Brosnan, 64 and the man who made Indiana Jones his own, Harrison Ford, 75, were the top picks as typifying the style men are looking for in their sixties and seventies. The top garment for men in their sixties were Blazer and chinos and in their seventies an overcoat.

“We played very loosely with Shakespeare’s idea of the seven stages of a man’s life and asked UK men to vote for their own famous fashion inspirations from the seven decades of their teens to their seventies and for the garment they most associated with that age,” explained Jenni Bamford from Jacamo.

“The famous faces people voted for are all great examples of people who have their own innate fashion sense, whether they know it or not. Of course in the younger generations like Brooklyn and Harry, men are often still finding their feet in terms of their own signature style and it is great to see younger men not being afraid to experiment with clothes. Choosing which garments were special at specific ages for our survey will be sure to have had a touch of nostalgia for most men, that first leather jacket, the first suit and especially the first dinner jacket, for many people they will all be linked to formative moments in their lives.

“Our poll shows fashion has no age restrictions and at Jacamo we have a huge choice of looks to suit everyone’s taste, size and budget.”
