Silver is the New Black

08 December 2017

  • The LSD is (Little Silver Dress) now selling faster than the LBD
  • Sales doubled in last six months
  • Demand for silver shoes and boots also soaring

Silver is the new black for party wear with the high street seeing record sales of sparkly clothing and footwear.

The staple LBD (Little Black Dress) normally worn at this time of year has been knocked off the top spot for Christmas events by a glittery rival – the LSD (Little Silver Dress).

Couture designers including Chanel, Balmain and Christian Dior launched the shiny look at premier fashion weeks earlier this year and celebrities have followed by parading the metallic hue on red carpet events ever since.

The silver dazzle has now become the fashion rage of the year and has been championed by famous faces including Cara Delevingne, Rita Ora, Gigi Hadid, Alexa Chung, Dakota Johnson, Heidi Kulm and Kendall Jenner.

Popular Downton actress Joanne Froggatt caught the look at a recent British Film Institute outing while Towie’s Chloe Sims showed off a full length silver ball gown while out on the town and Countdown’s Rachel Riley chose silver at a gala charity every for World AIDs Day.

Fashion brand Simply Be reports demand for silver clothing has doubled in the last six months while sales of LBDs, little black dresses, have remained stable.

Silver shoes and boots have also soared in popularity, proving to be the perfect finishing touch to add glitz to any look this party season. Metallic shoes are reported the top Instagram trend for 2017 as footwear fans post their photos on the social media site.

The online retailer offers 86 different styles of silver footwear this season, along with their trend-led collection of clothing and accessories, and has seen its highest ever number of searches for silver products over the last two months.

Their most popular pair of boots is a silver calf length pair that featured on the runway at the recent Simply Be Curve Catwalk show. Priced at £50, they have shown a 164% increase in sales over the past month, outselling the black colourway of the same boots by 188%.

“It’s great to see that women are adding so much shimmer and glitz to their wardrobes this party season and are not shy to embrace the metallic trend!

“Our catwalk-inspired AW17 collection includes all-over silver glitter dresses, a sequin biker jacket, metallic t-shirts and a range of silver shoes and accessories, so those who prefer not to shimmer from top to toe can get on-board with a nod to the trend whilst still making a statement.

Silver is no longer reserved for Saturday night, with trend-led pieces that can take you from office to bar!”
