Big Foot = Big Love?

31 August 2015

If the old adage that the size of a man’s feet is directly related to his performance in the bedroom is true, then the men - and women of London should be very happy.

According to the latest analysis of sales from men’s fashion retailer Jacamo, more shoes of size 11 and over are sold to Londoners than any other area of the UK.

Sales in the capital have been boosted by the new flagship Jacamo store on Oxford Street, which has seen a leap of 83% in demand for larger footwear over the past two months, as well as online purchases from London residents.

Coming hard on the heels of London is Sheffield, with sales of larger footwear 78% above the average, while Leeds comes in third at 72% higher.

Things don’t look so rosy across the border with Edinburgh and Glasgow registering the lowest for purchases of larger footwear – ninth and tenth respectively and at the same time registering as having the most buyers of smaller men’s footwear – size 8 and below.

Manchester and Liverpool tied at fourth place in the large feet league, with Birmingham coming in fifth. Tyneside, Belfast and Norwich, took the remaining places in the top ten, with above average sales for larger sized footwear for men.

Jacamo sells shoes and trainers up to size 17 and in various widths to cater for the ever-growing feet of UK men. Celebrities with above average sized feet include actors Gerard Butler, size 13, and Chris Hemsworth, size 12, Grammy winner Sam Smith, size 12 and comedian Stephen Fry, size 13.

Carie Barkhuizen from Jacamo, said: “I wouldn’t like to speculate on the truth behind the old wives’ tale about shoe size corresponding to the size of other body parts. However it’s interesting to see the variations in demand for larger footwear across the nation - in general we’ve seen a big increase over the last two years in sales of footwear size 11 and larger, for the whole of the UK, and as a result we upped the number of larger sizes we offer.”

According to the College of Podiatry the average British man’s foot has increased by two shoe sizes over past 40 years. In 1970, men's feet were size eight on average, but now the average male wears a size 10.

Top ten areas for above average sales of shoes size 11 and larger:

  • London (83%)
  • Sheffield (78%)
  • Leeds (72%)
  • Manchester/Liverpool (69%)
  • Birmingham (68%)
  • Tyneside (67%)
  • Belfast (66%)
  • Norwich (63%)
  • Edinburgh (61%)
